The nearly $2 billion public-private Capital Beltway HOT Lanes Project has the most significant package of improvements to
I-495 in a generation.

  • Four new lanes (two in each direction) on
    I-495 from the Springfield Interchange to
    just north of the Dulles Toll Road – 14 miles
  • Opportunity to pay a toll for a faster, more
    predictable trip
  • Introduction of high occupancy vehicle
    (HOV) and reliable transit options on the
    Capital Beltway
  • Replacement of more than $260 million of
    aging infrastructure, including:
    • More than 50 bridges and overpasses
    • Upgrades to 12 key interchanges
  • New direct access to Tysons Corner and
    Merrifield via the HOT Lanes
  • New safety measures in the HOT Lanes to
    promote driver safety

Upcoming Construction Milestones
Construction Improvements and Major Activities

At the end of the project, there will be four new lanes on part of the Capital Beltway. And, more than 50 bridges and overpasses as well as 12 major interchanges will be replaced. Learn more about the planned construction here.
